Pound Retreats as Oil Prices Surge on Supply Shock
The British Pound experienced a brief surge after UK data showed a 0.5% monthly increase in retail sales, exceeding expectations of a -0.2% contraction.
However, this optimism was short-lived as oil prices rose due to concerns over supply, reigniting fears of high inflation and overshadowing the resilient consumer spending numbers.
The Pound Sterling retreated to 1.3356 against the US Dollar, down 0.03%, after reaching a daily high of 1.3375.
The oil price shock is attributed to a Bloomberg article stating that Saudi Arabia has stopped supplying oil to European buyers for next month, sending West Texas Intermediate prices higher.
