Pound Sterling Holds Steady Amid Interest Rate Hike Expectations

The pound sterling has been holding steady near its six-month high against the US dollar, fueled by expectations of interest rate hikes from the Bank of England. Analysts and economists see this rally easing off towards the end of the year, however.

According to LSEG-compiled data, better-than-expected economic performance in the first half of the year has led market participants to anticipate at least a 25 basis point interest rate hike by the Bank of England. However, most analysts and economists disagree, predicting no change in interest rates, which could lead to a decline in the pound's value.

ING's FX strategist, Francesco Pesole, expects no hikes and a move to £0.870 in the coming months. He also anticipates a potential drop to 87 pence, resulting in at least a 2% decrease from Tuesday's trading levels.
