Pound Sterling Surges on Hawkish BoE Comments
The British Pound (GBP) has strengthened against the Euro (EUR) as traders react to hawkish comments from Bank of England Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden. The EUR/GBP exchange rate fell by 0.40% to around 0.8564.
Ramsden stated that if inflation pressures continue to build, further interest rate hikes could be warranted. He emphasized the importance of addressing external pressures such as energy prices and domestic risks including indirect effects on food prices and second-round effects.
Despite this support for the Pound, analysts at HSBC warn that UK growth concerns may limit gains. They point out that markets are already pricing in around 100bp of tightening from the BoE by July 2027, but caution that higher energy prices create a difficult policy mix.
