Pound Tumbles on UK Fiscal Worries, Inflation-Fueled Borrowing Spree
The British pound has hit its lowest level in nearly eight weeks against the US dollar due to concerns over UK government finances and the impact of inflation caused by the Middle East war. According to figures released by the UK National Statistics Office, public sector borrowing jumped to £18.26 billion in August, a 20% increase from last year's August numbers. This rise surpasses expected income from taxes and other receipts. The pound has been affected by these fiscal concerns as well as a strong dollar following the Federal Reserve's recent hawkish move.
The current exchange rate between GBP/USD is around $1.3372, holding steady at its lowest level since July 31st. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), GBP/USD futures are quoted at 127.83, down 0.37% for the day.
