Pound's Rally Tied to American Tightening Odds
The British Pound Sterling has rallied to its best ground since mid-July, but its advance is largely due to American market factors rather than any domestic momentum. Cable has been trading in a narrow range of around 45 pips above 1.3500, with the floor just below this level and the ceiling short of 1.3550.
The Pound's gain can be attributed to the weakening Dollar index following the release of July nonfarm payrolls, which contracted by 23K against an 80K consensus. This has boosted the odds of a September rate hike in the US, leading to a rally in Sterling.
However, this rally is conditional and based on American tightening odds rather than any UK-specific factors. The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has hinted at a possible rate hike, but the market has not been repriced accordingly. The Pound has essentially done nothing with the hawkish vote, which suggests that the market is waiting for further confirmation before making a move.
The week ahead will be dominated by American data releases, including inflation and retail sales figures, which may have a significant impact on Sterling's value. Meanwhile, the only scheduled British catalyst this week is the preliminary second-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reading, which is expected to show a deceleration.
