Public Invited to Shape Future of Euro Banknotes in European Central Bank Design Competition
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched an online consultation to gather public input on new designs for euro banknotes, which will feature iconic figures from European culture and nature.
The vote, open until September 21st, presents 10 shortlisted proposals that have been divided into two themes. 'European Culture' honors famous historical personalities such as opera singer Maria Callas, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and writer Miguel de Cervantes. Greek graphic designer Myrsini Vardopoulou's concept is among the finalists.
The second theme focuses on nature, using rivers and birds to symbolize unity, humanity's connection with the environment, and freedom. The ECB has invited an independent polling company to conduct a separate study using a representative sample of Eurozone citizens.
ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized that euro banknotes are more than just a means of payment; they represent Europe's shared identity. She stated, 'Euro banknotes are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.' The new designs are expected to be finalized by the end of the year.
