Rajan Calls for Rate Hike as Inflation Accelerates
Raghuram Rajan, former Reserve Bank of India chief and current member of the US Federal Reserve's task force, believes that the Fed should raise interest rates to combat accelerating inflation.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television at the annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Rajan stated, 'The Fed should be raising rates or should have raised rates already.' He added that he would be more hawkish than the current stance of the Fed, indicating a stronger stance against inflation.
Rajan attributed US growth to strong investment in data centers and a significant fiscal deficit. He noted that American consumers are running down savings and continuing to spend, suggesting an economy not being held back by restrictive financial conditions.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has been criticized for his communications strategy, with some interpreting his July policy meeting comments as a lack of resolve to bring inflation back to target. However, Rajan sees Warsh differently, stating that he 'has the right instincts' and is against inflation, but needs to communicate a clear plan to achieve this goal.
