Rand Falls Despite Local Gains as US Dollar Index Strengthens
Despite positive local data, South Africa's rand slipped by about 0.8% to 16.5750 per US dollar. This move highlights how global forces can impact emerging-market currencies more than domestic news.
The strengthening of the US dollar index by 0.2% contributed to this decline, as it typically tightens financial conditions worldwide and pulls money towards dollar assets. Meanwhile, South Africa saw improved factory sentiment in September, with a purchasing managers index survey showing a rebound in new orders, and industry body NAAMSA reported a 12.7% year-on-year increase in new vehicle sales.
The rand's decline led to an increase in the yield on the benchmark 2035 government bond to 8.845%, as investors priced in the extra inflation risk associated with a weaker currency.
