Rand Holds Steady Ahead of Inflation Data
The South African rand remained steady around 16.25 per US dollar as traders waited for next week's inflation data and clues on whether the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will raise interest rates.
Currencies often move less on what central banks do today and more on what investors think they'll do next, which is why Wednesday's consumer inflation report matters. The July inflation rate cooled to 4.3% year-on-year, easing pressure on policymakers, but a rebound would quickly revive bets on more tightening.
The SARB made the outlook harder to price after it unexpectedly held rates at its last meeting, saying policy was already tight enough to steer inflation back to target over time. This has led to mixed signals in South Africa's longer-term borrowing costs, with the benchmark 2035 government bond yield sitting around 8.615% in early trading.
