Rate Hike and Rising Oil Prices Threaten Australian Economy
Australians could be facing a triple threat to their bank accounts due to a potential rate hike, hotter inflation, and surging petrol prices. The country's unemployment rate has held steady at 4.4 per cent after 76,000 jobs were added in June.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) may decide to increase the cash rate at its next meeting in August, with a chance jumping from 20 to 35 per cent due to the strong labour force data. AMP's deputy chief economist Diana Mousina believes another 0.25 per cent rate hike is likely, taking the cash rate to 4.6 per cent.
However, CBA economist Trent Saunders forecasts a rate hold in August, expecting the unemployment data to have little impact on the RBA's near-term outlook. Next week's CPI release will be crucial for determining the RBA's decision.
