Rate-Hike Narrative Hangs in Balance Ahead of Pivotal Week
The global markets are bracing for a pivotal week ahead of the third and fourth quarter turn as the prolonged Treasury sell-off faces crucial data releases. The Federal Reserve's rate-hike narrative is set to be shaped by two key events: the August PCE inflation report on Wednesday and the September nonfarm payrolls on Friday.
Market expectations compiled by TD Economics show headline PCE holding at 3.7% year-over-year, with core PCE steady at 3.3%, both above the Fed's 2% long-term target. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis will adjust its price deflation methodology for three PCE components starting this report, potentially revising prior core PCE readings downward by 0.1-0.2 percentage points.
The nonfarm payrolls report is also expected to slow September additions to 100,000 from August's 162,000, with the unemployment rate at 4.2%. A strong jobs number in a high-inflation environment could paradoxically be seen as justification for the Fed to keep hiking rates.
In the tech sector, SpaceX will conduct Starship's 14th flight test next week, attempting its first true orbital insertion and deploying 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites. Micron Technology will report fiscal Q4 2026 results after Wednesday's close, providing a key window into the health of DRAM, HBM, and the AI data center supply chain.
As tensions in the Middle East persist, oil prices remain a key variable for markets, linking geopolitical developments, inflation expectations, Treasury yields, and broader financial direction. The Strait of Hormuz's trajectory carries transmission effects on energy prices and inflation that cannot be underestimated.
