Ravenna Native Weighs in on Canada Tariffs, Shares Banking Insights
Don Wilson III, a native of Ravenna and former JP Morgan Chase executive, shared his insights on Canada's economy and trade relations with the US. As a board member of the Bank of Montreal from 2008 to 2020, Wilson spoke about the bank's history and its role in shaping Canada's economic development. He noted that the Bank of Montreal was effectively the central bank of Canada until 1935, when the country created its own central bank.
Wilson expressed concern over low interest rates, stating that 'money ought to be expensive enough to borrow to keep people from speculating carelessly.' His prediction came true with the stock market crash in 2008. He also spoke about the impact of tariffs on trade relations between Canada and the US, citing President Trump's imposition of strong tariffs on Canadian goods.
During a Road Scholar tour group visit to Canada, Wilson's friend David E. Dix learned more about the country's economy and trade practices. The group's guide, Don Belec, expressed hopes for a restoration of friendship between the two countries, and Dix echoed those sentiments.
