RBA Bans Credit Card Surcharges Ahead of October Deadline
National Seniors Australia (NSA) is celebrating another major advocacy win after the Reserve Bank of Australia confirmed that surcharges on most debit and credit card payments will be banned from October 1, 2026.
The decision delivers on a key recommendation put forward by NSA in its submission to the RBA's Review of Retail Payments Regulation, which aimed to make payment options fairer for older Australians. According to Chris Grice, CEO of NSA, the removal of card surcharges will mean that consumers no longer have to pay unexpected fees when using debit or credit cards.
This change aligns with NSA's 'Keep Cash' campaign, which has seen thousands of supporters distribute stickers and bumper stickers to retailers, participate in consultations, and raise awareness about the importance of cash accessibility. The campaign has also contributed to the introduction of the Cash Mandate, requiring major supermarkets and petrol stations to continue accepting cash.
