RBA Cash Rate Soars to 15-Year High Amid Inflationary Pressures
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised its cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.6%, its highest level since 2011, as it battles inflationary pressures.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock pointed to several factors driving up costs: ongoing conflict in the Middle East, higher energy prices due to supply disruptions, and strong AI-related demand for data centres and chips. Domestic issues such as weak productivity growth and excess demand also contributed to firms increasing their prices or looking to do so.
This was the fourth rate increase in Australia this year, following years of near-zero rates. Higher interest rates tend to make cash and yield-bearing assets more attractive to investors, potentially weighing on crypto markets.
