RBA Confronts Global Volatility Amid Rate Hike
The Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy board met to discuss a potential rate hike amidst global economic volatility. The board is expected to raise the official cash rate by 0.25% to 4.6%, the highest level since November 2011, in an effort to manage inflation.
Daleep Singh, chief global economist at PGIM, highlighted two significant shifts: escalating geopolitical fragmentation and rapid artificial intelligence advancement. He referred to this as 'social Darwinism' and noted that it recalls the 1890s, where fragmentation led to conflict and supply shocks.
Singh also cautioned that AI's potential productivity boom could concentrate wealth and fuel inequality, leading to geopolitical rivalry. This has significant implications for central banks worldwide, who face a loss of independence as governments pressure them for lower borrowing costs.
