RBA Credit Card Surcharges Reforms: Savings for Consumers, Changes Ahead
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is set to introduce significant reforms affecting debit, prepaid, and credit card surcharges starting October 1. These changes are expected to save consumers an estimated $1.6 billion annually.
While the removal of small surcharges may seem beneficial, experts warn that credit card holders might find themselves at a disadvantage due to potential alterations in credit card perks and increased fees.
Nicole Pedersen-McKinnon, a financial literacy expert, notes that banks have begun to 'quietly slash' credit card benefits such as points, interest rates, and complimentary services in anticipation of these changes.
These anticipated changes include modifications in the earning rates for frequent flyer points, higher annual fees, and some restrictions on benefits like travel insurance. Pedersen-McKinnon advises consumers to closely scrutinize communication from their banks regarding these adjustments.
