RBA Faces Dilemma as Unemployment Rate Hits 4.6%
Australia's unemployment rate rose to 4.6% in August, its highest level since the COVID period, complicating the outlook for interest rates ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia's next policy meeting.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a seasonally adjusted employment increase of 39,000 people during the month, but this was outpaced by a 28,000 increase in the number of unemployed Australians as more people entered the labour force.
RBA governor Michele Bullock had previously stated that an unemployment rate between 4.5% and 5% would be sufficient to ease wage and inflation pressure.
