RBA Faces Pressure Despite Australia's Surprise Budget Boost
Australia's federal budget has received an unexpected $6 billion boost due to higher superannuation and investor income. This is according to Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who revealed that the underlying deficit for 2025-26 is about $6 billion smaller than the forecasted $28.3 billion.
The improved deficit can be attributed to a decrease in national payments by $1.4 billion and an increase in receipts of $4.6 billion. Additionally, new public demand grew by 2.2 percent.
Despite this positive news, Chalmers acknowledged that financial pressures will persist. He stated, 'Responsible economic management is a defining feature of this government.'
Economists are warning that this boost may not be enough to deter the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) from further interest rate hikes. AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said that inflation remains above target at 3.5 percent, and the RBA's main concern is the persistently high demand in the economy.
