RBA Fears Inflation May Require Further Rate Hikes Amid Rising Energy Prices
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has expressed concerns about inflation, which it believes may require further interest rate hikes. In an interview, RBA governor Michele Bullock stated that the bank's previous forecasts for inflation were too optimistic and that the current situation is more dire than expected.
Bullock pointed to several factors contributing to rising inflation, including the ongoing Middle East conflict, the AI boom, and extreme weather events. These developments have increased pressure on energy, food, and tech prices.
The RBA has previously forecast that inflation would return to its target range by the end of 2027, but Bullock noted that this may not be the case. In fact, she stated that inflation is more likely to overshoot forecasts than undershoot them.
Bullock's comments have increased speculation about a potential interest rate hike in September. Money markets have already priced in a high likelihood of a rate rise, with some predicting two hikes by March 2027.
