RBA Hikes Interest Rates Amid Inflation Concerns
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has increased its benchmark borrowing rate to 4.6%, its highest in nearly 15 years, in an effort to combat high inflation.
This marks the fourth rate hike this year and is expected to increase mortgage payments by around $450 per month for average homeowners.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock acknowledged that the decision would be difficult for households with mortgages and businesses with loans, but emphasized that high inflation affects all Australians.
The RBA's preferred measure of inflation, trimmed mean inflation, is currently at 3.6%, above the bank's target range of 2-3%.
The decision to raise interest rates has sparked a debate about the cause of inflation, with some attributing it to the Middle East conflict and others blaming domestic demand driven by government spending.
