RBA Hikes Interest Rates to Highest Level in 15 Years Amid Global Pressures
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised interest rates for the fourth time this year, bringing them to their highest level in 15 years. The cash rate target now stands at 4.6 per cent after a 25 basis point increase.
This decision was made despite concerns that higher borrowing costs will further squeeze household budgets and impact discretionary spending. Gimantha Jayasingh, head of foodservice for Circana, warned that consumers are likely to adapt by visiting less often, trading down, or seeking out promotions.
Glenn Fahey, chief economist with the Australian Retail Council, said retailers rely heavily on peak sales periods like Black Friday and Christmas. He noted that sharply higher fuel costs combined with the rate rise risks taking momentum out of consumer spending just as these events approach.
