RBA Hikes Interest Rates to Highest Level Since 2011 Amid Persisting Inflation
Australia's Reserve Bank has raised interest rates to their highest level since 2011 in an effort to combat inflation. The RBA increased its cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.6%, marking its fourth hike of 2023. This move comes as consumer price inflation remains above the bank's target range, currently sitting at 3.5%.
The Reserve Bank warned that more interest rate increases may be necessary if inflationary pressures persist. The RBA's decision follows similar moves by other major central banks, including the European Central Bank and US Federal Reserve.
The recent surge in crude oil prices has contributed to higher energy costs and increased global inflation. The RBA stated that it will continue to monitor economic conditions and take further action if necessary to bring inflation back within its target range.
