RBA Hikes Rates to 15-Year High, AUD/USD Sees Initial Rally
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) made its widely expected decision to hike interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the cash rate target to a 15-year high of 4.60%. This move was seen as a necessary step to combat inflation and maintain economic stability.
According to Brown Brothers Harriman, the RBA's statement highlighted that some of the upside risks flagged in August are materializing, which justified the rate hike. The decision was unanimous, with the RBA reaffirming its readiness to increase the cash rate target further if needed.
Initially, the AUD/USD pair rallied on the hawkish RBA statement, but subsequently reversed as Governor Michele Bullock signaled less urgency for additional tightening. Her comments suggested that the four hikes this year may be sufficient, which tempered the market's initial reaction.
RBA cash rate futures currently price in 36 basis points of tightening over the next twelve months, limiting policy divergence with the Federal Reserve and offering support to the AUD/USD pair. Additionally, Australia's strategic exposure to commodities linked to energy, AI, and defense remains a key long-term tailwind for the Australian dollar.
