RBA Hints at Another Rate Hike as Inflation Fight Continues
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has hinted at another potential rate hike this year, following its recent decision to raise the cash rate to 4.6%. RBA Governor Michelle Bullock stated that higher interest rates are necessary to combat inflation and will be increased further if needed to bring down inflation levels.
Bullock acknowledged that this move may be difficult for businesses with loans and households with mortgages, but emphasized that high inflation affects all Australians, especially the most vulnerable. She highlighted the need to stop expectations of high inflation from becoming embedded in price-setting decisions across the economy.
The federal coalition has criticized the RBA's decision, attributing it to the government's spending habits and 'addiction' to inflation. Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson accused Treasurer Jim Chalmers of making excuses for the government's role in contributing to inflation and high rates.
