RBA Interest Rate Hikes Remain on Table as Inflation Surges
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released its August inflation report on Wednesday, revealing that headline inflation rose to 4% over the past 12 months. This increase from 3.5% in July comes as a surprise to some investors.
Transport prices played a significant role in the rise, with automotive fuel prices jumping 14.8% in August and increasing 13.5% over the past year. Housing costs also remained high, rising 5.7% over the past 12 months.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has already raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 4.60%, citing inflation as a major concern. The RBA stated that it is prepared to lift rates again if needed, particularly with energy prices and capacity pressures in the economy still affecting prices.
