RBA Keeps Rates Unchanged, Sets Stage for Future Rate Cut

Commerzbank's Volkmar Baur recently reported that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) kept interest rates unchanged, marking a unanimous decision. The move was as expected by market participants, who had anticipated a rate hike but did not receive one. In fact, the RBA left rates where they were, with no dissenting votes in favor of raising the benchmark interest rate.

The statement accompanying the decision did not sound particularly hawkish, according to Baur. The new forecasts revised upward the expected unemployment rate and downward short-term inflation forecasts. However, medium-term inflation forecasts were revised upward, which likely justifies further rate hikes as 'certainly conceivable' with inflation risks remaining on the upside.

The Commerzbank analyst expects that the RBA's next move will be an interest rate cut in the medium term, suggesting the Australian Dollar (AUD) is likely to remain under pressure over coming months. While the AUD showed little movement in its initial reaction to the decision, this could change if expectations shift toward a future rate hike.
