RBA Leaves Room to Tighten Despite Cooling Labor Market
Australia's labor market has shown signs of cooling down, but not at a pace that would prompt the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to ease its hawkish stance. The country's unemployment rate remains steady at 4.5%, within Governor Michele Bullock's target range of 4.5% to 5%. This leaves room for further tightening by the central bank, according to Matt Simpson, a market analyst.
The recent job numbers indicate that part-time employment fell by 32,200 in one month, while full-time employment edged higher. However, Simpson views this as a 'little soft around the edges' rather than a warning sign, particularly after a larger gain the previous month.
Simpson notes that Australian participation and employment-to-population ratios are drifting lower but remain high by historical standards. The RBA's hawkish stance is expected to continue, with markets and all of Australia's Big Four banks already backing a rate hike.
