RBA Minutes Leave Rate Hike Decision Hanging in the Balance

The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) minutes from its August meeting showed that policymakers seriously considered hiking interest rates but ultimately decided to hold off due to concerns about inflation risks. The RBA confirmed that it had debated a 25 basis point hike, but judged that the current policy rate of 4.35% was sufficiently restrictive for now.

However, the minutes also revealed that the RBA is open to pre-emptive tightening based on monthly data alone, which keeps the possibility of a September rate hike alive even without the release of the quarterly Q3 CPI. The key test will be Wednesday's July CPI report, which will provide the only monthly inflation read before the RBA's next meeting on September 28-29.

If the CPI print shows stronger-than-expected inflation, it could strengthen the case for another rate hike and keep September tightening firmly in play without waiting for Q3 CPI. On the other hand, a softer reading would reinforce the argument that 4.35% is already doing enough and give policymakers more reason to use time rather than another rate increase.
