RBA Predicts Fourth Interest Rate Hike as Inflation Concerns Persist
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to raise interest rates for the fourth time this year, according to money markets. This move comes as a result of ongoing inflation concerns, with the RBA's target rate of 2-3% well above the current 3.5%.
Money markets now predict a 95% chance of an interest rate hike in September, followed by a 44% chance of another increase in December and a 17% chance of a third hike in May 2027. This is a significant shift from previous predictions, with economists previously split between one or two rate hikes.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock has emphasized the importance of using interest rates to combat inflation, citing the success of other countries in reducing inflation through monetary policy. However, she also acknowledged that Australian mortgage holders feel interest rate hikes more keenly due to the prevalence of variable-rate mortgages.
