RBA Raises Interest Rate Amid Multiple Inflation Pressures
Australia's Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has increased its benchmark interest rate to 4.6 per cent, marking its fourth rise this year for mortgage borrowers.
RBA governor Michele Bullock attributed the rate hike to multiple inflation pressures, including an energy supply shock, higher costs for imported fuel and technology equipment, a technology investment boom, and demand pressures that were already present before the Middle East conflict worsened.
Bullock emphasized that while the conflict was making conditions worse, it was not the sole cause of inflation. The RBA believes that aggregate demand needs to remain subdued for a period to reduce capacity pressures and return inflation to target.
Independent economist Chris Richardson described inflation as 'too much money chasing too little stuff.'
