RBA Rate Hike Hits Fiji Hard, Exacerbating Economic Woes
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised its cash rate target by 25 basis points to 4.60 per cent, a move that will have far-reaching consequences for Fiji's economy.
Fiji's primary economic partner is Australia, and Fijian businessman Div Damodar says the decision will directly impact the country's local economy.
Damodar notes that higher mortgage repayments in Australia will mean Australian households have less disposable income, leading to reduced tourist arrivals and lower spending in Fiji's tourism sector.
In addition, the remittance sector could be affected as Fijian diaspora workers in Australia face higher living costs, reducing their personal savings and subsequently lowering monthly cash transfers sent home to families in Fiji.
To mitigate these risks, Damodar recommends that Fiji pivot its marketing strategy towards value-conscious travel packages and expand promotional reach into secondary markets. For remittances, he suggests scaling low-fee digital wallets and offering structured investment channels for diaspora funds.
