RBA Rate Hike Justified as Aussie Inflation Hits 4.0%
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) hiked the official cash rate by 0.25% on Tuesday, citing concerns about inflation and capacity pressures in the economy.
According to the RBA's media release, 'inflation remains elevated' and some upside risks are materializing. The bank noted that recent inflation outcomes were stronger than expected at the previous meeting.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the August quarter consumer price inflation report on Wednesday, which justified the RBA's decision to hike rates. Headline CPI inflation rose to 4.0% year-on-year, up from 3.5% in the 12 months to July 2026.
The increase was led by housing, which rose by 5.7%. The ABS data also showed that some of the upside risks flagged by the RBA are materializing.
