RBA Seeks Higher Unemployment to Tame Inflation
Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Michele Bullock has acknowledged that unemployment needs to rise towards 5% to ease inflationary pressures. In a statement, she emphasized that the labor market needs to be loosened to counteract the impact of soaring fuel prices on inflation.
The RBA has a dual mandate of price stability and full employment, but Bullock noted that they cannot wait any longer to take action. Australia's high per capita diesel consumption makes it particularly vulnerable to rising fuel costs, which are expected to intensify inflationary forces.
Bullock's comments come as the country struggles with record-high fuel prices. The RBA is facing a difficult balancing act between maintaining full employment and controlling inflation, but Bullock has made it clear that they prioritize price stability in this instance.
