RBA Set to Hike Interest Rates Amid Soaring Fuel Prices
Australia is bracing for an interest rate hike to nearly 15-year highs as mortgage holders face increased costs. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles acknowledged households are 'doing it tough' and said the government is working to put downward pressure on inflation.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to lift the official interest rate to 4.6 per cent, a move driven by soaring fuel prices and rising living costs. Central bankers in the US, Japan, and Europe have also pushed interest rates up due to global economic pressures.
Marles attributed the inflationary environment to international circumstances, specifically the conflict in the Middle East, rather than domestic policies. He stated that Australia's budget and economy are 'in a good position' to manage these challenges due to lower debt levels compared to other countries.
