RBA Signals Rate Hike as Inflation Concerns Intensify
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has signaled that it may raise interest rates in September as inflation concerns intensify.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock told a parliamentary hearing that developments since August's meeting suggest some upside risks to inflation are materializing, despite slowing economic growth.
Bullock emphasized the need for the RBA to get inflation back under control, warning that failing to do so would be worse for the economy overall. The ongoing conflict in Iran has driven up oil prices, while a strong El Nino and AI boom have put pressure on energy, food, and tech prices.
The Brent crude price remains above $US104 a barrel, with Commonwealth Bank head of commodities Vivek Dhar warning that it could reach as high as $US150 a barrel. Global oil supplies are dwindling, and inventory depletion raises the risk of uncontrolled demand destruction in emerging economies.
