RBA Sounds Alarm on Inflation Risks Ahead of Next Rate Hike Decision
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has warned that inflation risks are increasing, putting households on notice for potentially more interest rate hikes. RBA governor Michele Bullock stated that it could be several years until inflation returns to the bank's 2-3% target range.
According to Bullock, the longer inflation remains higher than this, the more monetary policy tightening, rate hikes, will be needed to balance out the economy. Inflation is currently at 3.6%, having held steady at that level over the past year.
The RBA's latest outlook brought forward the timeline for inflation returning to the midpoint of the target range from mid-2028 to late 2027. However, with August data not yet released, the RBA will rely on concerning July figures when making its next call on interest rates in just over a week.
The Middle East conflict, AI boom, and extreme weather events are contributing to upward pressure on energy, agricultural, and technology-related prices. Bullock warned that 'upside' risks to inflation, things that could cause inflation to be higher than expected, are starting to play out.
