RBA Sounds Alarm on States' Debt Binge Threatening Economic Stability
The Reserve Bank of Australia's economists have expressed private concerns about the growing state debt in Australia. This concern is rooted in the potential for ballooning state debts to limit governments' ability to respond effectively to future economic shocks.
State and territory debt has significantly increased since the COVID-19 pandemic as premiers invested heavily in infrastructure, expanded the public sector, and implemented cost-of-living handouts.
The Reserve Bank's economists worry that this rapid accumulation of state debt could make the banking and superannuation systems vulnerable to a sudden sell-off in state bonds. This is because a significant portion of these institutions' assets are comprised of state bonds.
