RBA Surcharge Ban Set to Shake Up Australian Credit Card Landscape
Australia is on the cusp of a significant change for credit card users. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has implemented a crackdown on card surcharges, set to take effect from October 1.
This shift will impact consumers who rely heavily on credit cards for rewards and benefits. Professor Steve Worthington from Swinburne University noted that the reforms could effectively penalize heavy credit card users, stating 'The people who enjoyed the luxury of bonuses will lose out.'
The RBA's crackdown includes disallowing surcharges and reducing the cap on interchange fees received by banks for card transactions. This change will drop the cap from 0.8% to 0.3%, resulting in a substantial financial impact on banks, estimated at a loss of over $660 million annually.
The banks have begun notifying customers of imminent changes to card benefits. Commonwealth Bank has introduced modifications such as ending fee waivers and introducing international transaction fees, while other banks like ANZ and NAB have also increased interest rates and altered rewards systems in various ways.
