RBA to Hike Rates Despite Cooling Labor Market
The Australian unemployment rate has risen to 4.6% in August, its highest level since November 2021, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
This increase marks a trend of cooling economic conditions, with the rate climbing by 0.5 percentage points since the beginning of 2026.
Despite this, financial markets remain convinced that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) will implement another interest rate hike when it meets next week.
The RBA's focus on inflation has created a friction point with the broader economy. While the bank has cited a 'tight' labor market as a primary driver for inflationary pressure, recent data shows that most indicators of labor tightness have returned to or fallen below historical trends.
