RBA to Raise Interest Rates Amid Inflation Concerns
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on Tuesday, according to predictions from CreditorWatch, CommBank, and Westpac.
CreditorWatch chief economist Ivan Colhoun noted that a higher rise is unlikely, but further hikes after the announcement are possible.
Colhoun stated that a quarter-point increase 'isn't that significant for the whole economy,' suggesting that rates may need to be half a percentage point higher before Christmas or early next year to provide further restraint on the economy and lower inflation.
The RBA has been managing its role in balancing low unemployment with high inflation, which remains an issue despite previous rate cuts. Colhoun emphasized the importance of tackling inflation, saying 'if you just let prices keep rising and rising at a very quick rate, that's not good for lots of people.'
