RBA Warns of Growing Vulnerabilities Amid Resilient Australian Financial System
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has released its October 2026 Financial Stability Review, highlighting both resilience and vulnerabilities in the country's financial system. The review notes that Australia's financial system remains broadly resilient, with most households having mortgages able to manage more difficult economic conditions.
However, the RBA also emphasizes that there are pockets of financial stress among some households, and that financial conditions are not uniform across all borrowers. Furthermore, while most Australian businesses can manage elevated cost pressures, operating conditions remain challenging for certain sectors.
The review also addresses the banking system's capacity to continue lending, stating that Australian banks remain well-positioned to provide credit during a potential economic downturn. Additionally, it examines risks associated with non-bank lenders, concluding that system-wide financial stability risks from these institutions are contained due to their relatively small size in comparison to the broader Australian financial system.
The RBA highlights several areas of increasing vulnerability, including ongoing geopolitical tensions and growing vulnerabilities across global financial markets. It also identifies advances in artificial intelligence as a development requiring attention from financial institutions, as well as potential disruptions involving critical service providers.
