RBC CEO Seeks Long-Term Trade Deal Amid Ongoing US-Canada Trade War
Royal Bank of Canada's CEO, David McKay, expressed hope that Ottawa and Washington will reach a long-term trade deal to end the ongoing trade war. McKay stated his concern about the expansion of the trade war but emphasized the importance of finding a mutually beneficial agreement for both nations.
The trade war has led to uncertainty in the economy, with Trump announcing import bans and new tariffs on certain Canadian products, including alcohol, dairy products, motorcycles, and other items. McKay noted that the banks have seen a bump in their capital market business segments, contributing to their comfortable third-quarter earnings.
RBC announced a $1.4-billion initiative to invest in Canadian technology companies with potential for global growth, further encouraging economic development. Despite the uncertainty caused by the trade war, the banks' provisions for credit losses remain stable, indicating confidence in the near-term future.
