RBC Expands Energy and Quantum Tech Investments
Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY) is making significant strides in both the energy market and future technology sectors. The bank recently secured General Clearing Member (GCM) status at European Commodity Clearing, allowing it to clear and settle contracts for power, gas, EEX carbon, and other EEX-listed products for clients including energy firms and banks.
In addition to its energy market expansion, RBC has made a direct equity investment in Photonic Inc. during a C$180 million funding round in December 2025. The bank also appointed Dr. Elizabeth Iwasawa as its Director of Quantum to lead its quantum strategy and build the bank's quantum research and development program.
RBC is further strengthening its commitment to quantum technology through partnerships with academic institutions. The bank has inked multi-year deals with the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto to fund quantum talent, PhD fellowships, research, and industry collaboration. Additionally, RBC is collaborating with Xanadu to run a hands-on quantum computing training program using Xanadu’s open-source tools to develop practical quantum applications for RBC staff and projects.
