RBI Faces Hawkish Pressure from Record Diaspora Inflow
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is facing pressure to take a more hawkish stance on monetary policy due to a record $133 billion inflow from the Indian diaspora. This influx has left banks awash with cash, causing overnight rates to fall below the RBI's 5.25% policy rate.
The liquidity surge comes at a time when credit growth is accelerating, domestic demand remains resilient, and inflation is picking up. To prevent excess liquidity from adding to price pressures, the RBI has drained over $10.4 billion through bond sales and other measures.
Market participants expect further action from the RBI in coming days, with some predicting an interest rate hike next week due to rising food costs and elevated oil prices. Economists at Nomura Holdings Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group are among those anticipating a hike.
