RBI Governor Warns of Crypto Risks Amid CBDC Exploration
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is maintaining a cautious approach to cryptocurrencies due to concerns over monetary policy, monetary sovereignty, capital flows, and the 'singleness of money', according to RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra.
Malhotra stated that while domestic payments in India are fast, cheap, and convenient, cross-border payments remain a significant challenge. Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could potentially address this issue by providing a more efficient and regulated means of international transactions.
Former European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet also weighed in on the matter, warning that the global expansion of cryptocurrencies is hampering global finance.
