RBNZ Warns Oil Price Hike Could Fuel Higher Inflation
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has warned that rising oil prices could push near-term inflation rates higher than previously forecast. Governor Anna Breman stated that recent increases in global oil prices and longer-term interest rates reflect a challenging environment.
Breman noted that if oil prices persist, they may result in slightly higher near-term inflation than assumed in the September statement. However, she expressed confidence in the economy's recovery, citing growth of 0.2% during the three months ending in June.
The Governor highlighted the resilience of the export sector, low unemployment rates, and a strong housing market as drivers of economic growth. She also anticipated labor market conditions to improve and household purchasing power to increase as inflation returns to the 2% target.
