RBNZ Weighs Interest Rate Hike as Bond Market Tightens
New Zealand's central bank, the RBNZ, has been monitoring inflation closely. The latest jump in headline inflation to 4.1% in the June quarter was largely driven by higher fuel prices linked to the Middle East conflict, rather than a broad surge across the domestic economy.
Core inflation remains relatively steady, making it more complicated for the RBNZ to decide on interest rates. Governor Adrian Orr has stated that policy is moving closer to neutral, but insists the OCR (official cash rate) is not on a preset path.
The bond market is already reacting ahead of the RBNZ's decision, with New Zealand's 10-year government bond yield climbing back toward levels last seen in 2024. This increases mortgage rates and corporate borrowing costs, making financial conditions tighter than the OCR alone would suggest.
