Revolut Warns Tourists of Barcelona's Hidden Currency Exchange Fees

Barcelona is one of Europe's most visited cities, but its reputation for hidden markups in currency exchange is well-earned. The city leans towards card payments, with contactless accepted almost everywhere.

Avoid going to '0% commission' exchange booths that build a 5-15% margin into the rate itself, or use dynamic currency conversion (DCC) which locks in a less competitive rate than your card provider's. This is especially true near ATMs where teams target people who have just withdrawn cash.

The official currency of Spain is the euro, issued by the European Central Bank and used as sole legal tender across the euro area. Barcelona Airport has Global Exchange counters that post markups of 8-12% over the official rate.
