Ringgit Strength Fails to Deter Singapore Shoppers
Singaporeans continue to shop in Malaysia despite the ringgit's recent appreciation against the Singapore dollar. The Malaysian currency has been Asia's best-performing currency for the past two years, rising 2.8% against the U.S. dollar this year and trading at around RM3.10 to S$1.
For some Singaporeans, a stronger ringgit has increased their living costs in Johor, a southern Malaysian state bordering Singapore. For example, Lee, a 31-year-old financial adviser, said her monthly expenses have risen by about S$200 due to the currency's appreciation.
Despite this, many Singaporeans remain undeterred and continue to cross the border for shopping and other activities. According to data from e-wallet providers, cross-border spending by Singaporeans remains resilient, with conversion volumes rising steadily last year and nearly 42% higher in January compared to the same month last year.
