Rising Term Premiums Signal Shift in Market Dynamics
Term premiums on U.S. Treasurys have been rising in recent days due to investor concerns over corporate debt and inflation.
Guy LeBas of Janney Montgomery Scott explained that investors are demanding higher yields for long-term government bonds because they fear the hyperscalers - major tech companies like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and others - will issue a large amount of new debt to fund their expansion into AI data centers. This would drive up corporate bond yields, making government bonds more attractive as well.
'There's a certain amount of interchangeability between a high-quality corporate bond and a government bond,' LeBas said. 'And so if there's a lot of issuance, interest rates on both of those are going to have to go up.'
Bond investors are also worried about inflation eroding the long-term value of their investments. JPMorgan Chase's Alex Wolf noted that the Federal Reserve has been sending mixed signals about how it will combat inflation.
